Two weeks ago my wife and I was in a truck accident. In the last week, I have lost one college friend to an accident and another friend of mine lost his mom in an accident.  This has a way of making a person reflect on the preciousness of life.

All human life has value

I feel the need to say that, not because we would devalue the life of others. I say it because we often devalue our own life. Let me explain…

How many times in our Christian walk have we said something similar to “I am so unworthy of His love” or “I am such a wretched person.”  Now, before I say anything else, we needed the blood of Christ.  It is part of God’s redemption for his creation.  Not to be misunderstood, we have all sinned against God.  But there is a big difference between the idea that we have all sinned and the idea that we have no worth.  Scripture tells us differently.

To begin with, I want to go to Genesis 1:31 “And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.”

Six times during the creation account God pronounces his creation as good but it is after the creation of male and female that God looks at all he has created and calls it very good.  I believe this important because before it is recorded that man and woman did, produced, or accomplished anything God says it isn’t just good, it’s fantastic! Yet, sadly, we don’t see ourselves the way God sees us.  But if this isn’t enough for you to see you do have value and worth in God’s eyes, let’s look at another passage of Scripture.

Exodus 19:5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine;  The Hebrew word for treasured possession is se.gul.lah.  I have been told that in the Old Testament, people would give a treasured possession to the other party with whom they have made a covenant.  It could be a covenant between any two people that they would exchange a treasured possession, and not necessarily something of monetary value although it could be if desired.

Above are some of our treasured possessions…  some of them aren’t worth much in actual value but they are things that we value.  What are your treasured possessions?

More importantly, the Creator of the Universe who owns everything that exists views you as his se.gul.lah, you are God’s treasured possessions!  It’s right there in the text.  If God loved us enough to send his Jesus then why on earth do we devalue ourselves?  It is time to place a higher value on life, your’s and mine.  It’s time to change the way we talk about ourselves, we do have value and worth

When you come to those moments where you feel worthless, a failure, or that you have let God down, remember you are a treasured possession.
