On May 6th, 1917, the 10-year-old congregation of NLCC held a dedication service to celebrate the construction of their new church building. The 50x50 foot brick structure was built to accommodate the rapidly growing church as they eagerly anticipated the impact they would make on the community of North Liberty. On the front of the building, they placed a cornerstone reading “Christian Church established by the 2nd chapter of acts… Built 1916”. North Liberty Christian Church would worship in that building for the next 61 years before moving to our current location under the name of North Liberty Church of Christ.

We're excited to share the next chapter of NLCC! On May 6th, exactly 107 years later we are returning to the name etched into the cornerstone of that brick building…

North Liberty Christian Church

Important Answers to Important Questions

Why the name change?

The name North Liberty Christian Church is not new but rather firmly rooted in our church’s history. Technically, NLCC had operated as “Christian Church” for more than half of it’s lifetime.

Over the last 117 years, “Christian Church” and “Church of Christ” have been used to describe different worship styles, and we align closer to the definition of a Restoration “Christian Church”. We want our name to clearly represent who we are and what we believe so that everyone has accurate expectations when worshipping with us.

Will anything else change? (core values, beliefs, services, mission statement, etc.)

There will be no change to our Doctrine, Mission Statement (Experiencing God, Transforming Lives), or our five Core Values (Devote Daily, Pursue Community, Guide Biblically, Live Transparently, Engage Missionally), Sunday morning worship services, or ministries happening within this building.

Is this change legal according to our bylaws/state legislature?

We will include a DBA in all legal documentation to reflect this change. DBA stands for "doing business as" and is a legal term that refers to a business's name that's different from its legal name. A DBA is also known as a trade name, assumed name, or alternate business name. A DBA name is registered with a state or local governing body to notify the public that a business is conducting business under a name other than its legal name.

What about my tithing and offering?

Any prewritten checks will continue to work alongside this name change. Going forward you can write checks out to NLCC or North Liberty Christian Church.

Does this change affect our service contracts or agreements?

We will not be changing our legal name so this will not trigger any changes to contracts or a need to go back to procurement. All our agreements will continue without interruption.

Will all your contact details change? (emails, social media handles, etc.)

Part of our strategy alongside this change was to have as minimal impact as possible for things of this nature. Most of our online identity is tied to the abbreviation “NLCC” or “NorthLibertyCC” which will still function alongside the new name.

Do I need to do anything?

You can help by excitedly spreading the word about these changes. It may take some time to get used to but be intentional about using new verbiage and logos whenever possible.

Words of encouragement from NLCC members past and present

  • Tim Stewart (Current Head Pastor)

“I’m excited for the name chage, not for the sake of change but because it gives God a fresh opportunity to reveal His plan for NLCC and also to assure us that it will be fulfilled through those who worship here for generations to come.”

  • Tom Jones (Former pastor at NLCC)

“This name change establishes a connection to the heritage and legacy of the congregation at NLCC. A congregation that believes strongly in the Bible and is committed to loving the community of North Liberty.”

  • Terry Knowlton (Current Member)

“I like the new name. As long as Christ remains the focus of our church the future is good.”

  • Brian Henry (Ordained at NLCC)

“I personally love the idea of going back to the name “Christian Church”. My great-grandpa was minister at NLCC when it was called “Christian Church”. The two churches I have served as minister for nearly 50 years are called “Christian Church”. Plus, there will be no more mistaken conclusions that my home church is a “non-instrumental” Church of Christ. Blessings to you as you continue to hold up the name Christ in North Liberty.”

  • Preston Stanley

It is so important for our name to describe clearly who we are as a church, especially now that we have an online presence and have the potential to reach people way beyond just North Liberty. The name ‘Christian Church’ will help everyone have accurate expectations when experiencing God with NLCC.”

  • Jody Healey (Current Family Minister)

“I’m excited about the name change. Though nothing changes for us in our vision, mission, and doctrine. I believe that the name change aligns our church with our movement and history in a clearer way.”
